It has been a difficult road trip for the St. Louis Cardinals; this trip has really back-fired on the team's Central Division standing and spirits. The Cardinals have only won two out of nine games on this trip. In Houston, a players meeting was called where the players got together to figure out how to overcome the hurdles they currently face. The players are really trying to light the spark; they even shaved their heads to help join in unity, unfortunately that did not help out Tuesday night's 3-0 loss. The Cardinals are now seven games behind Houston and four games back on the Wild Card.
Hopefully the Cards can look at past seasons and realize the power of a 2nd place team that can come from behind to take it all home. For example, in 1964, the Cardinals were 11 games out on August 21st; we came back to beat out Philly and went on to beat the New York Yankee's in the World Series. You never know what may happen when you walk in between those two white lines on the field, but I can sure tell you the Cards are looking for everything and anything to get on the winning train again.
Pedro Feliz has been a nice addition defensively and getting Mott and Rasmus back has helped as well. The Cardinals also have the roster expansion, so hopefully those called up might light a spark to help the club make a run to post-season action. I would also like to congratulate Albert for hitting the 400th home run of his illustrious career here in St. Louis; keep them coming Big Boy.
These next 30 days are "do or die". It might be joyous or it might be frustrating – but it will be exciting to see what happens. If any team and manager can turn this one around, it is these Cardinals and Tony LaRussa.
Keep an eye out too for some interesting changes this month on the lunch menu at Shannon's; I'm really excited to see what Chef Nick Zotos has planned. See you this weekend at beautiful Busch Stadium for a showdown with the first place Cincinnati Reds.
