Mike's Bits

There is no doubt that the 2010 season was a roller coaster ride and unfortunately ended in disappointment.   However, the team did end on a fine note winning their last five games. I was happy to see our five starters finish on a strong note; they certainly had a tough stretch there near the end of the season.

I have been asked by many fans what is going to happen to Tony LaRussa. My guess is that he is coming back next season. We should expect an answer from Tony in the near future, hopefully within a short time. I would like to tip my cap once again to Albert Pujols who lead the National League in the Home Run and RBI categories, and all of the Major Leagues in runs scored. Way to go Albert. I was also happy to see Matt Holliday finish the 2nd half of the season strong; Matt certainty showed us what he is capable of.  And how about Adam Wainwright winning 20 games this season for his first time; way to go Waino.

The Cardinals' starting pitching staff for next year should remain pretty much intact. The bullpen will require tweaking; look for some adjustments among the left handed relievers. David Freese has a question mark by his name in terms of being healthy enough to play third base next season. I hope to see him recover and back in action. All in all, the St. Louis Cardinals have a strong nucleus. The Cards will be working on finding that leadoff hitter who has speed and some power; hopefully that person will be able to play the middle infield. Speaking of middle infield, it is possible that we'll see some moves at the 2nd base and shortstop positions as well. Who knows what the off-season will bring us, but I look forward to seeing how everything unfolds.

I was honored and humbled to accept the 2010 Media Person of the Year Award from the Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis. It was a true honor being recognized and I felt lucky to accept the award and be in company with the other winners Jeremy Kohler and Margaret Freivogel. Special thanks to Anheuser-Busch, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Dewitt family for all their support. And it was great to have so many members of my family there with me.

As the playoffs begin, another big baseball question is who is going to go to the fall classic from the National League. My pick is the Philadelphia Phillies; I wish them the best of luck. Have a great October and I look forward to telling you about my off-season adventures which are about to start.

Chef's Corner Private Dining

This month I am going to feature my 10 ounce marinated Flat Iron Steak. This tender steak is marinated in Chimichurri sauce which is common in South America, specifically Argentina. This steak also comes with four pieces of Ancho-Honey Glazed Shrimp, with a side of Coconut and Plantain Mashed Potatoes. The Flat Iron Steak is a must try, and I look forward to hearing your feedback on this month's featured steak.

From the Vault

This month we are highlighting the Freemark Abbey Bosche. This is worth trying if you're fond of a rich, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. Visually the Bosche is a deep, vibrant burgundy color with a slight orange tint. The Bosche is a very smokey, cedary wine with a taste of mint and dark cherry, dried leaves, plum and black cherries. Shannon's has a healthy supply of this treasured wine, so come in and enjoy a bottle of Bosche with one of Chef Nick Zotos's award winning steaks.
