Mike's Bits

Hello from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I always enjoy making my way East and enjoy watching these two clubs get together.  For this series, I'm paying close attention to the Cardinals pitching.  This is a true test for the Cardinal hurlers as they face one of the best offensive teams in the game. The series is knotted up so far with a playoff like game last night as the Phillies beat the Cards by the score of 2 to 1.   The Cardinals are hoping for a victory tonight to jump ahead in this series.

The Cardinals pitching and bullpen has been fabulous. How about Ryan Franklin? He has been dynamite, 7 for 7 in the save category; keep those saves coming, Mr. Franklin. And the rest of the bullpen has been great too.

The rookies have been great this year so far, lead by David Freese and Jamie Garcia.  Freese has been outstanding, even winning the NL player of the week, and Garcia has been lights out on the mound.  Let’s not forget Nick Stavinoha who has had some very encouraging and big at bats for this Cardinals team – including two pinch-hit home runs.  And it seems like every game we have a different hitting star or two.

Brendan Ryan and Skip Schumaker have been turning beautiful double plays and really have become a dynamic duo to watch. Those two are better at turning the twin killing than any team in baseball right now which has helped our pitching and boosts the momentum for the team – plus it’s great how it takes the wind out of the sails of the opposing club.  Next time you’re in the restaurant check out the Ryan and Schumaker snugs; what a place to eat lunch or dinner.

The Cardinals are doing just what the Manager wants; they are winning series. In fact, they have won 7 of their 8 series so far and are on their way to hopefully winning 8 of their first 9 series.

While we are here in the city of Brotherly Love, I would like to congratulate Ryan Howard, the St. Louis (Lafayette High School) native, on his five-year $125 million contract extension, beginning in 2012. He’s a great young man for baseball, and has made St. Louis proud. I hope to see you at the ballpark or the restaurant when we get back in town for our 3-game series versus the Astros. So long from Citizen’s Bank Ballpark.

This month we are highlighting our former Rams coach, Dick Vermeil who has his own wine collection from the Frediani Family Vineyard in Calistoga. Vermeil, who was born in Calistoga, the northernmost town in Napa Valley has teamed up with Paul Smith and Jim Frediani to produce the Vermeil wine collection. We have recently acquired his 2005 Cabernet Franc, 2006 Zinfandel, and his 2003 Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignon.

We are also featuring a new white wine we have added by the glass - The Riff Lageder Pinot Grigio.  Don’t forget to come during happy hour to enjoy our wines by the glass for ½ price.
